St
Nicholas Church
By about 1400 the village had moved up to its present site and a new
church - the present building - built in its centre. Many of the materials
of the old church, stone and timber were re-used in the new one and some of
the fittings like the old parish chest brought up. This old parish chest,
the oldest in Buckinghamshire, is still in use today. Furthermore a brass
table in the chancel of the present church records the death of one John Dervyle
who died in 1410 as the first rector of this church, his predecessors
being rectors of the old church down the hill

Mowing Rota
Each growing
season for the last few years, kind-hearted and community-conscious villagers
have put their names on to the Church lawn mowing rota. As the spring warmth
is already encouraging the grass to grow, may I encourage anyone who is prepared
to take a turn (or two) at mowing the church grass to contact me for inclusion
on this years rota. Instructions and a full copy of the final rota (which
runs from March to October on a weekly basis) will be supplied. Please let
me know if I can include you by phoning 682367 or emailing royshons@btinternet.co.uk Many thanks. Steve
Friends
of St Nicholas Church
The Friends
of St. Nicholas comprises of a small committee of villagers, chaired by Steve
Jenkins. Its purpose is to maintain the fabric of St. Nicholas church, which
is recognised as the heart of the village.
To date fundraising
has involved social functions, such as Jazz Evenings and a 50/50 Promise
auction and the profits from several years 100 Club have funded repairs
to:
Bell
tower
The roof and masonry
The boundary wall
Removed the obsolete chimney
Provided new, safe ladders to the bell tower.
We still have lots to do including, repairs to the brickwork above the porch and replacing the main gates. We will commence fundraising again in the Spring, probably with a second auction.
Please contact Steve
through The Crier, if you require any more information
